Morning

The harbour & Churchill's viewpoint

Start at the colourful fishing harbour, then walk up to the miradouro where Churchill famously painted the view in 1950. It hasn't changed much.

Midday

Espada & poncha in the village

Fresh black scabbardfish with banana — the local dish — at one of the harbour-side restaurants. Follow it with a poncha (the island's signature rum drink) at a village bar.

Afternoon

Cabo Girão skywalk

Drive or take a bus fifteen minutes up the cliff to the highest sea-cliff viewpoint in Europe. The glass-floor walkway over the edge is both terrifying and unmissable.

Evening

Sunset from the breakwater

Walk out to the end of the pier as the sun drops behind the cliffs. The silhouette of the fishing boats and the orange light on the basalt is what postcards are made of.
