Why we built this

Most Madeira sites are listicles written from a desk somewhere else.

We grew up on this island. We launched Beyond Madeira in 2024 from a small office in Funchal because friends of friends kept asking the same things: which tour is actually worth it, where do you really eat, is the north coast safe to drive in winter.

The answers existed — but never on one site. Tripadvisor surfaces volume. The big OTAs surface margin. Operators surface their own jeeps and boats. None of them surface someone who lives here.

We live here. You're visiting. That's the whole arrangement.

We don't run our own jeeps or boats. We pick the operators we'd send our own family with and put them under one roof — one team, one inbox, one standard. If it isn't good enough for our family, it isn't here.

How we work

A short, honest list of what we do — and don't.

We say no more often than we say yes. This is the standard behind every booking on this site.

We test before we list.

Every tour, every car supplier, every villa. We ride the jeep, drive the car, sleep in the bed. If it doesn't pass, it doesn't go on.

45+ partners. We've said no to many more.

A licence isn't enough. We turn down operators with rushed safety briefings, weather-blind itineraries, or a habit of cancelling small groups.

We re-check seasonally.

Skippers leave, guides change, levadas close. Every quarter we re-test the active list and quietly drop what slipped.

WhatsApp is a person, not a bot.

Open 08:30–18:30 daily, answered from Funchal by us. Replies in minutes during office hours. After hours, we read everything that pings the on-call phone.

No deposits, no held cards.

Most activities are free to cancel up to 48 hours before. Cars are paid on pickup. We don't sit on your money.

If something is closed, we say so.

The show caves at São Vicente and Cavalum are closed. The trail you read about may be shut. We update the site instead of selling the dream.
