Pico do Arieiro: Everything You Need to Know

Updated 22/10/2026

Pico Arieiro: Complete Guide to Madeira's 3rd Highest Peak (2026)

Standing at 1,818 metres, Pico Arieiro is Madeira's third-highest peak — and the only one you can drive to. On a clear morning you watch the sun break above a sea of clouds. On a golden afternoon the light turns the jagged ridges copper. And here's what most guides still won't tell you: on a bad day it's completely socked in with fog and you'll see nothing at all.

This is the honest, up-to-date version for 2026 — written by people who drive up here every week. Parking costs, the new entry fees and time-slot system, the truth about sunrise versus sunset, and the big one: the PR1 trail to Pico Ruivo is now one-way, which changes everything about how you plan it.

Quick answer

  • Viewpoints are free — you only pay for parking. The trail fee only applies if you hike PR1
  • Parking: €4/h up top (P1) or €2/h lower down (P2, 15-min walk) — card only, first 15 min free
  • PR1 trail: now one-way, Pico Arieiro → Pico Ruivo. Open Fri–Sun for now, daily from 26 June 2026
  • Trail fee: €4.50/person for the short Pedra Rija section, €10.50 for the full route to Pico Ruivo — pre-booked online
  • The local move: come for sunrise, but don't start the full PR1 at first light — do the short section, then hike the full trail later in the morning
  • Temperature: 10–15°C colder than Funchal — a windproof jacket is non-negotiable
  • Always check the live webcam first — the summit makes its own weather

What to expect at Pico Arieiro

Pico Arieiro sits at 1,818 metres, making it Madeira's third-highest point after Pico Ruivo (1,862m) and Pico das Torres (1,851m). It's the only one of the three you can reach by car, which is exactly why it fills up at sunrise.

At the summit

Pico do Areeiro
Pico do Areeiro
  • Two car parks — P1 (top, €4/h) and P2 (lower, €2/h, 15-min walk up)
  • Pousada do Pico do Areeiro — café-restaurant with hot drinks, meals and souvenirs (opens 09:00)
  • Public toilets inside the building (09:00–18:00)
  • Several viewpoint platforms with safety railings — free, no ticket needed
  • The PR1 trailhead — the famous ridge walk to Pico Ruivo

The main viewpoint faces east and north, out over sharp volcanic ridges. On a clear day the view runs from the Laurissilva valleys below to the North Coast cliffs.

The weather reality

Here's what we tell every guest: Pico Arieiro can be completely buried in cloud and you'll see nothing. It happens more often than people expect, and more often at sunrise than later in the day. You can leave Funchal in bright sunshine and drive 35 minutes up into thick fog.

Local secret #1: If you arrive and it's grey, don't turn around straight away. Wait 10–15 minutes. The cloud up here moves fast — we've watched it go from zero visibility to crystal clear in twenty minutes. Grab a coffee, check again, give the mountain a chance.

The local move — come for sunrise, hike PR1 later

Read this before you plan

Sunrise and the full PR1 hike don't mix at first light

Watching the sunrise here has become a Madeira ritual — which is exactly the problem. Hundreds of people arrive in the dark, and the moment the Pedra Rija gate opens for the day, everyone funnels through it at once. Tickets get checked one by one, the narrow ridge bottlenecks, and the trail that should feel wild feels like a queue.

So split it. Come for the sunrise from the free viewpoints — no slot, no ticket needed. Then either walk only the short Pedra Rija out-and-back, or save the full PR1 for later in the morning when the dawn crowd has cleared. You don't need to start the big hike at 6am; the full route takes 3–4 hours and you've got all day.

Our favourite version: be up top for first light, hike the full one-way trail around mid-morning, and you can even be back at Arieiro for sunset. Two of the best light windows on the island, one day, no queue in between.

Sunrise vs sunset: the honest truth

Both are spectacular when conditions line up — but sunset has far better odds, and far fewer people.

Sunrise reality

Why people love it: the sun breaking over the horizon and setting the cloud layer on fire below you is genuinely one of the great sights in Europe.

The catch:

  • Leave Funchal around 05:30–06:00 to make it before the sun
  • Cold — often 5–10°C, sometimes below freezing in winter, almost always windy
  • P1 fills completely — arrive 1h–1h30 before sunrise for any chance of a top space
  • Cloud is common — plenty of mornings the summit is fogged in
  • Busy — tour vans roll in before 6am

Sunset (often the better call)

  • Check the live webcam in the afternoon and decide on real conditions — no driving blind in the dark
  • No 5am alarm
  • Warmer, kinder temperatures
  • The same golden light on the same ridges
  • Afternoons are statistically clearer than mornings
  • A fraction of the crowd — easy parking even 30 minutes before

Local secret #2: The best light isn't at the moment the sun appears — it's the 15 minutes before, when the sky turns pink and orange. Everyone waits for the sun itself; the people who get the photo are already set up in the dark before it.

The smart Pico Arieiro day plan

If you want the full island-classic day — sunrise, the famous ridge walk, and a sunset to finish — this is the order that actually works without queueing at dawn.

05:30
Leave FunchalDrive up via Monte (35–40 min). Layers and a hot drink in the car — the café won't be open yet.
06:15
Sunrise from the free viewpointsPark at P1 if you can, walk to Miradouro do Juncal or Ninho da Manta. No ticket needed for the viewpoints.
08:00
Coffee + warm upPousada café opens around 09:00. Let the dawn crowd drift off while you wait out the gate rush.
09:30
Start PR1 with your booked slotFull one-way ridge to Pico Ruivo (3–4h), or just the short Pedra Rija section and back if you want it easy.
14:00
Lunch on the way downPoncha and hot chocolate at Abrigo do Poiso, or grilled trout at Ribeiro Frio.
~19:00
Optional: back up for sunsetIf the webcam looks clear, return for the second-best light of the day — with almost no one around.
Not a hiker? Drop the PR1 line entirely. Sunrise or sunset from the viewpoints, a short walk to Ninho da Manta, coffee at the café — that's a brilliant half-day on its own, no ticket required.

Parking — the reality (2026)

P1 — Upper car park (top)

  • Price: €4/hour, €20 per 24h max, first 15 min free
  • Capacity: ~70 spaces only
  • Distance: 1–2 min walk to the main viewpoints
  • Payment: card only (no cash)

P2 — Lower car park (your backup)

  • Price: €2/hour (half price), €5 per 24h max, first 15 min free
  • Capacity: ~300 spaces (much bigger)
  • Distance: 15-min uphill walk to the top
  • Advantage: nearly always has space, and you save €2/hour

Don't park on the road: when the car parks fill, people abandon cars along the verge — it blocks buses, the police step in and close the road, and you risk being towed. If P1 is full, go straight to P2. It almost always has space.

Entry fees & the time-slot system (2026)

New since January 2026: all 42 of Madeira's official trails now need an online reservation, a fixed time slot, and a paid ticket for most visitors. Simply visiting the Pico Arieiro viewpoints by car is still free — you only pay if you set foot on the PR1 trail.

What the trail actually costs

RouteGeneral publicProtocol operatorResidents*
Pico Arieiro → Pedra Rija (short, both ways)€4.50€3.00Free
Pico Arieiro → Pico Ruivo (full PR1, one-way)€10.50€7.00Free

*Madeira residents registered on SIMplifica go free but must still book a slot.

What it adds up to

Couple, viewpoints only (no hiking):

  • P1 parking: €4
  • Trail fee: €0
  • Total: €4

Couple, full PR1 to Pico Ruivo (DIY):

  • P2 parking: €5 (day max)
  • Trail fee: €10.50 × 2 = €21
  • Taxi back from Achada do Teixeira: ~€40–50
  • Total: ~€66–76

Couple, full PR1 with a protocol operator (transfer included):

  • Trail fee at protocol rate: €7 × 2 = €14 (often bundled)
  • No taxi headache — they drop you at the start and collect you at the end
  • Total: package price
Local secret #3: Because the full trail is one-way, the taxi back from the finish is the hidden cost that catches people out. A self-guided transfer or guided hike usually works out simpler and gets you the cheaper protocol trail fee.

How to book your PR1 slot (step by step)

Independent hikers book through the official regional system, SIMplifica. It takes about three minutes. You can pay any time before you start — even at the trailhead — but signal up the mountain is patchy, so always do it the night before.

  1. Go to the official SIMplifica siteOpen the Madeira trails booking page and find the "Request" button on the left — it's labelled "Solicitar" in Portuguese.
  2. Choose your trailSelect PR1 Vereda do Areeiro, then pick whether you want the short Pedra Rija section or the full route to Pico Ruivo.
  3. Pick your date and 30-minute slotSlots are capped, so popular times — especially around sunrise — book out days ahead. Book this first, then plan the rest of your trip around it.
  4. Enter your detailsYour email and country of origin. You'll get the confirmation by email.
  5. Pay by cardEnter your bank card and you're done. Save the confirmation offline — rangers check tickets along the route.
Two planning traps: Don't build your whole Madeira itinerary around PR1 — the mountain weather is unpredictable and the slot system is still new. And note the trail closes completely on 14–17 and 21–22 September 2026 for boardwalk works. Always check the current status before you go.

Want us to handle the whole thing?

Skip the slot-juggling and the taxi-back problem. We offer self-guided transfers (we drop you at the start, collect you at the end) and fully guided hikes with local experts — trail fee at the cheaper protocol rate, timing and weather backup all sorted.

The PR1 trail: Pico Arieiro to Pico Ruivo

Vereda do Areeiro
Vereda do Areeiro

The PR1 Vereda do Areeiro is the trail people picture when they imagine hiking in Madeira: a knife-edge path along the central massif, in and out of cloud, with tunnels carved through the rock, linking Pico Arieiro (1,818m) to Pico Ruivo (1,862m), the island's highest point.

The big 2026 change — it's now one-way: The full PR1 must be walked in one direction only: Pico Arieiro → Pico Ruivo, finishing with the descent to Achada do Teixeira. Walking it back the other way is no longer allowed. The short section between Pico Arieiro and Pedra Rija is the exception — that still works in both directions.

What's open right now

Until 26 June 2026

Full trail open Fridays, Saturdays & Sundays only. Monday–Thursday you can walk as far as Miradouro da Pedra Rija (km 1.2) and back, while repair work continues on the rest.

From 26 June 2026

Full trail back to daily, seven days a week. The heavy construction is due to finish by then. Closed again 14–17 & 21–22 September for boardwalk works.

The short section — Pico Arieiro → Pedra Rija

If you only do one thing on the trail, do this. It's open in both directions, year-round, and in our opinion it's the most dramatic stretch of the whole hike.

  • About 1.2 km each way · 40–60 min return · easy–medium
  • Trail fee: €4.50 (general) or €3 (protocol operator)
  • Ninho da Manta — the "Buzzard's Nest" viewpoint, ringed by jagged peaks
  • The "Stairway to Heaven" — the exposed stone staircase you've seen all over Instagram (it has railings, but it's not for anyone uneasy with heights)
  • Miradouro da Pedra Rija — the turnaround point, with views people genuinely struggle to describe

Is it worth it without the full trail? 100%. Many visitors are completely happy with just this and never miss the rest.

Stairway to Heaven · Pedra Rija section

The full route — Pico Arieiro → Pico Ruivo

  • One-way, roughly 7 km to Pico Ruivo (continuing down to Achada do Teixeira to exit) · 3–4 hours · hard
  • Sharp ridges, several dark tunnels (a phone torch is enough), steep staircases, big exposure
  • Controlled hours apply and rangers check tickets — get through the Pedra Rija gate before the last allowed time or you won't be let through to continue
  • Trail fee: €10.50 (general) or €7 (protocol operator); residents free
  • You finish nowhere near where you started — arrange transport from the end before you set off
The tunnels: there are several, and a couple are long and properly dark. Your phone torch does the job, but a small headtorch keeps your hands free on the uneven floor.

How to get there

Option 1: drive (most flexible)

Type "Pico Arieiro" into Google Maps or Waze. The route via Monte takes 35–40 minutes from Funchal. The road is fully paved — any car works, no 4x4 needed. Roads from the north and east are steeper and narrower, so for an easier climb come up from the Funchal/Monte side.

Need a car? Complete rent-a-car guide →

Option 2: public bus (€3)

Operator: Horários do Funchal, from Praça da Autonomia on the Funchal promenade.

  • Departures: 06:00 and 13:30, daily (except 25 December or when weather/road closures prevent access)
  • Returns: 12:15 and 19:00
  • Price: €3 per trip
  • The 06:00 arrives ~06:45 — great for a winter sunrise, but too late for the summer one. Don't miss the last return.

Option 3: tours & transfers

Don't fancy the mountain roads — or the taxi-back puzzle?

We run guided hikes with transport included, self-guided transfers where we handle the driving and the one-way logistics, and 4x4 tours that take in the summit. You just enjoy the view.

What to bring

Even if it's 25°C and sunny when you leave Funchal, it will be much colder and windier at 1,818m.

Essential (always)

  • Warm layers — fleece or down jacket, even in summer
  • Windproof outer layer — it's almost always windy up here
  • Closed shoes — trainers are fine for the viewpoints, boots for PR1
  • Water — the café sells drinks but charges for the altitude
  • Sunglasses — light bouncing off the cloud layer is fierce
  • Phone/camera fully charged + offline map downloaded

For sunrise

  • Headtorch or phone torch for the walk in the dark
  • Extra layers, gloves and a hat — standing still in 5°C wind is far colder than walking
  • A hot drink in a flask — the café won't be open yet

For hiking PR1

  • Hiking boots for ankle support
  • Trekking poles (optional but handy on the descents)
  • Snacks and plenty of water — nothing to buy on the trail
  • Headtorch for the tunnels, basic first aid, sunscreen and a hat
Temperature guide: reckon on 10–15°C colder than Funchal. If it's 20°C at sea level, expect 5–10°C at the summit — and add wind chill on top.
Local secret #4 (winter hack): if the wind at the viewpoint is brutal, go inside the café and shoot through the windows. You still get the epic view, you're warm with a coffee, and the glass is clean — the angle's better than you'd think.

Practical tips & local secrets

Food & facilities

The Pousada do Pico do Areeiro café-restaurant (09:00–18:00) does hot drinks, pastries, sandwiches, soups and hot meals — pricier than Funchal but fair. Toilets inside, usually clean. Nothing is open pre-dawn, so bring your own warmth for sunrise.

Where to eat after

Abrigo do Poiso (10 min back down): poncha and hot chocolate, the perfect thaw after a cold summit — and a local favourite.

Ribeiro Frio (15–20 min): grilled trout, and you can pair it with the easy hour-long Vereda dos Balcões walk.

Plan your route on the interactive Madeira map →

Mobile signal

Coverage at the summit is generally good — you can check weather and share photos. On the PR1, signal drops in the tunnels and on the far side, so download an offline map and your trail ticket before you go.

Stargazing

With almost no light pollution, Pico Arieiro is one of the best spots on the island for the night sky. The Milky Way core is at its best from late June to August on a clear night.

Safety & respect

The viewpoint platforms have railings and are very safe. The PR1 has exposed sections with real drops — stay on the marked path, don't lean over edges for photos, and never attempt it in heavy fog or high wind. You're inside the Madeira Natural Park: stay on the trails, take your litter, leave the plants and wildlife alone.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a 4x4?

No. The road is fully paved — any regular car is fine.

Does the parking take cash?

No. Card only, at both car parks.

Is Pico Arieiro worth it without hiking?

Yes, completely. The viewpoints are spectacular and a 1–2 minute walk from the car park — no ticket needed. 30–60 minutes is plenty.

Is the PR1 trail open?

Yes. The full one-way route (Pico Arieiro → Pico Ruivo) is open Fridays–Sundays now, and daily from 26 June 2026. The short Pedra Rija section is open both ways every day. Closed 14–17 & 21–22 September for works. Always check the current trail status.

Why is the trail one-way now?

After a hard winter of snowfall and rockslides, the IFCN made the full route one-way (Arieiro → Ruivo) to improve safety and ease congestion on the narrow ridge while repairs continue. Only the Pedra Rija section stays bidirectional.

How do I get back from the end of PR1?

You finish at Achada do Teixeira, well away from your start. Pre-arrange a transfer, or take a taxi (~€40–50). A self-guided transfer or guided hike removes the problem entirely.

How much does it cost in total?

Viewpoints only: €4 (parking). Short Pedra Rija hike: €4 parking + €4.50/person. Full PR1: €10.50/person + parking + transport back from the end.

What time should I arrive for sunrise?

1 hour before sunrise for the experience, 1h30 before for any chance of a top-car-park space in peak season.

Can I take the bus for sunrise?

It depends on the season. The 06:00 bus arrives ~06:45 — good for a winter sunrise (~07:30), too late for a summer one (~06:15). Outside winter, drive or book a transfer.

Can kids do it?

Viewpoints: yes, safe and easy. Short Pedra Rija section: active kids 8+. Full PR1: fit kids 12+ only.

Plan the rest of your Madeira trip

Final word: Pico Arieiro is one of Madeira's truly great places — but in 2026 it rewards a plan. Come for sunrise but don't queue at the gate; book your PR1 slot the night before; sort your ride back from the far end; check the webcam before you commit; and dress for the altitude, not for Funchal. Get those right and it's memorable.
