Every June, Funchal swaps its sunsets for gunpowder. For a full month the city runs concerts, street performance and a programme of cultural events — but the part most people come for is the international fireworks competition, fired straight over the bay on Saturday nights.
Pyrotechnic teams from different countries each take one Saturday and the public votes for the winner. The shows are choreographed to music — locals call them espetáculos piromusicais — and the whole amphitheatre of Funchal, hills to harbour, turns into one big grandstand. Here's what's on in 2026, where to stand, and the two boats that put you on the water underneath it.
When is it?
The festival runs across the whole of June. The fireworks land on the four Saturday evenings:
6Sat Jun
13Sat Jun
20Sat Jun
27Sat Jun
Note: the international competition and the bigger pyromusical shows fall in the second half of the month. Dates and the running order are set by the regional government and the operators — always confirm the exact night when you book a boat.
Who's competing in 2026
It's an international competition — born in 2002, now drawing over 120,000 people to Funchal each June. Four countries each take one Saturday night over the bay; on the closing night two winners are crowned: the Atlantic Trophy, chosen by a jury, and the Madeira Tão Tua trophy, voted for by the public.

The shows go up around 10.30pm over the bay of Funchal, about 20 minutes each. The winners are announced on the closing night, 27 June.
Watch it from the water
From land you watch the fireworks. From a boat in the bay, you're underneath them — sky above, lights doubling on the water, the bang arriving a half-second late. Two of our partners run sailings on the festival Saturdays. Both are licensed Funchal operators; you book direct and we'll point you to the right night.

Watch from land — for free
You don't need to spend anything. The fireworks go up over the bay, so anywhere along the Funchal seafront with an open view works. Good spots:
- Avenida do Mar & the Pontinha pier — front-row, right on the water. Gets busy; arrive early.
- Molhe da Pontinha / the harbour wall — wide, unobstructed view across the bay.
- Higher up — the miradouros above Funchal (Pico dos Barcelos, Monte) trade closeness for the whole-amphitheatre view, lights mirrored on the sea below.
Good to know
- Bring a layer. June days are warm but evenings by the water are cool, especially on a boat.
- Camera or phone on a steady hold. Long shows reward a tripod or a railing to brace against.
- Parking is tight near the seafront on show nights — walk, taxi, or arrive well before the start.
- Combine it with the rest of June. The same month is peak whale and dolphin season — same boats, same bay, different sky.
Questions people ask
What exactly is the Festival do Atlântico?
A month-long festival in Funchal every June, run by the regional government. It combines a cultural programme — concerts, street performance, exhibitions — with an international fireworks competition fired over the bay on Saturday nights, where pyrotechnic teams from different countries compete and the public votes for the winner.
When are the fireworks in 2026?
On the four Saturday evenings of June 2026 — the 6th, 13th, 20th and 27th. The international competition and the largest pyromusical shows fall in the second half of the month. Confirm the exact night with the operator when you book, as the running order is set by the organisers.
Where's the best place to watch?
Anywhere along the Funchal seafront with an open view of the bay — the Avenida do Mar and the Pontinha pier are front-row and free. For the full picture, the viewpoints above the city show the fireworks against the whole amphitheatre of Funchal. For the most memorable version, watch from a boat on the water directly beneath the show.
How much does a fireworks boat cost?
Our partner VMT Madeira runs a fireworks cruise from €40 per adult (€20 for children 5–12, free under 4), including a glass of champagne, strawberries and an open bar. Ventura do Mar runs a sunset-and-DJ party boat with open bar at €55 per person. Both sail on the festival Saturdays.
Do the boats sell out?
Yes — especially the headline competition nights. Book ahead. Message us on WhatsApp and we'll hold a place on the date you want.
Is it suitable for children?
The fireworks are a family event and watching from land is free and easy with kids. The VMT cruise has child pricing and goes free for under-4s. The Ventura boat is a DJ party sailing, so it's better suited to adults and older teens.
