Important update for hikers: due to the weather warning issued for Madeira, the Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation (IFCN) has confirmed that all classified hiking trails are closed today only (January 1st).
This closure applies exclusively to today and is a preventive safety measure following the alert issued by IPMA for the Madeira Autonomous Region.
IFCN also confirmed that the forest road connecting Eira do Serrado to Pico do Areeiro is closed today.
Please follow official guidance: respect Civil Protection instructions and avoid risk-taking behaviour, especially in exposed areas and mountain zones.
Once trails reopen, if you notice any unsafe conditions (such as rockfalls, fallen branches or trees blocking the path, or other anomalies), IFCN asks that these situations are reported.
