Highest Peaks in Madeira

Madeira mountains

Madeira is a true mountain island — steep ridges, deep valleys, and viewpoints above the clouds. If you’re planning a hiking day, these are the highest peaks to know (and how people usually experience them).

  • Pico Ruivo is the highest point (best reached from Achada do Teixeira)
  • Pico do Areeiro is the most accessible high peak (sunrise classic)
  • The other peaks are part of the same central massif and are often enjoyed from the main trails

Pico Ruivo (1862 m)

Pico Ruivo is Madeira’s highest point. On clear days, you get wide views across the island — a perfect “above the clouds” experience. The most accessible route usually starts at Achada do Teixeira (shorter and more manageable). The famous ridge experience is the PR1 route coming from Areeiro, which is longer and more demanding.

Pico das Torres (1851 m)

Pico das Torres sits on the main mountain ridge between Areeiro and Ruivo. It’s one of the most dramatic points of the massif, with sharp rock formations and steep drops. Most visitors experience it from the main ridge trail area rather than aiming for a direct summit.

Pico do Areeiro (1818 m)

Pico do Areeiro is the easiest high peak to reach by road and one of Madeira’s best sunrise spots. Even if you don’t hike far, a short walk from the main viewpoint already gives you big ridge scenery and “sea of clouds” moments on good days.
