3 mistakes most first-time visitors make in Madeira (and how to avoid them) 🌿
After living here for years, these are the mistakes I see visitors make again and again — and they can easily ruin a day if you’re not prepared. Here’s how to avoid them 👇
Madeira has micro-climates. It can be sunny at the beach and completely foggy at Pico do Areeiro 20 minutes later. A quick look at the live webcams can save an entire day — especially for sunrise, hikes and viewpoints.
Check the webcams before leaving your accommodation and follow the good weather instead of the plan on paper.
Some hikes look beautiful online but are long, exposed or unsafe after heavy rain. Many beginners accidentally choose trails that aren’t ideal for a first hiking experience.
Start with easy, safe trails like Balcões, Levada do Rei or Levada do Alecrim. You can explore curated suggestions in our Levada Walks Guide.
Madeira feels small on the map, but driving times are longer than people expect. Trying to do east + west + north in the same day often ends with more time in the car than enjoying the views.
Split your days by area:
East Day • West Day • North Day
