West or East Madeira:

    which is the best choice?

Discover the secrets of an island with two distinct souls. Let us guide you through landscapes that will take your breath away.
    One island, two worlds

Madeira is much more than just an island

Madeira may seem small on the map, but as soon as you arrive, the island quickly reveals itself to be bigger, deeper and more diverse than expected. The weather changes fast, the landscapes transform every 20 minutes — and choosing where to start can be a tough decision.
This guide helps you decide calmly, without over-planning. It doesn’t tell you to “see everything”, but explains how each side of Madeira really presents itself — and how most travelers end up enjoying each one best.

    Quick Answer:

Most first-time visitors choose to start with the West — higher chance of good weather, more variety and a more relaxed pace. The East is iconic, but depends more on weather conditions.

    Best Plan:

If you have 3 days or more, do both (one per day). If you only have time for one side, the West is the best choice for most people.

    Honest Comparison

    Car Rental vs Guided Tour

Many travelers arrive in Madeira with the idea of renting a car — and most end up enjoying the experience. However, there are aspects that only become evident on site: the stress of parking at popular spots during peak season, passing hidden waterfalls without knowing where to stop, or losing hours on narrow mountain roads.
You avoid the logistics, visit places that don’t appear on Google Maps and travel with local guides who know the island like the back of their hand. You can choose between shared tours (social and affordable) or private ones (fully personalized, at your own pace).

    Car Rental

    On your own

    • Complete schedule flexibility
    • GPS navigation on winding roads
    • Time lost looking for parking
    Challenges to consider:
    • • Very narrow and steep roads
    • • Difficulty finding places without local GPS
    • • Stress of driving on unfamiliar terrain
    • • Doesn't know when/where the weather changes

    Guided Tour

    With local guide

  1. Local guide with deep knowledge
  2. Real-time weather adaptation
  3. Stops at the best viewpoints
  4. Exclusive advantages:
    • • Local stories and unique curiosities
    • • Flexible route based on weather
    • • Hotel pickup and drop-off
    • • Zero stress — just enjoy

Most common option: Shared tour to the West (more stops, ideal with guide) and visit the East by car (simpler roads). Or book private tours for both sides if you want total flexibility.

    West Madeira

    The wild and green side

If we had to recommend just one side for first-time visitors to Madeira, the West usually wins. Not because it’s more beautiful, but because it offers the greatest diversity with the lowest level of stress. From fishing villages to volcanic pools, from ancient forests to impressive cliffs, the West reveals all of Madeira’s personality in a single memorable day.

    Bridal Veil Falls

    Iconic waterfall

    Porto Moniz

    Natural pools

    Fanal Forest

    Laurissilva Forest

    Local Tip:

The West adapts better to weather changes. If the plateau gets cloudy, you can focus on sunnier coastal areas. This flexibility means days here rarely feel "wasted".
Duration: Full day, from fishing villages to Europe's highest sea cliff.

    Shared Jeep 4x4

The same incredible route through the West, with an extra dose of adventure: open-top jeep, off-road mountain trails and access to hidden spots that most tourists never see.
    • Includes: Free hotel pickup

    Private (Jeep or Minivan)

Your group, your pace, your day. Customize every stop, add sunrise or sunset and explore the West exactly as you wish.

    East Madeira

    Dramatic and volcanic landscapes

It’s in the East of Madeira that the island’s most dramatic beauty reveals itself. Higher mountains, sharper ridges and some of the most iconic views. It’s visually striking, emotionally intense — and creates memories that remain long after the trip ends.

    Pico do Arieiro

    1818m above the clouds

    Ponta de São Lourenço

    Nature Reserve

    Ribeiro Frio

    Forest Park

    Local Tip:

The East shines especially on clear days. Checking live webcams before deciding can prevent disappointment — or just book a tour and let the guide adjust the schedule for you.

    FAQ

    Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before booking. If you can't find the answer, contact us via WhatsApp – we respond in minutes!

What's the difference between a shared minivan and a shared jeep?
Minivan = comfortable and smooth ride, best value for money (€40 per person). Jeep 4×4 = more adventure, open top, off-road trails and a more exploratory feel (€58 per person). The main stops are similar, but the experience is slightly different.
When should I book a private tour instead of a shared tour?
Private tours are ideal if you want total control of the schedule (sunrise or sunset), customize stops, travel with family or friends at your own pace, or need specific pickup locations outside the main areas.

What if the weather conditions change during my visit?
Guides adjust routes in real time. If the west plateau is cloudy, we head to sunnier coastal areas. If the east peaks are covered, we focus on lower altitude attractions. Tours are rarely canceled — we adapt.
    Is the pickup really free?

Yes, completely free in Funchal, Caniço and Câmara de Lobos. If you’re staying in other areas (Porto Moniz, Calheta, Santana, etc.), pickup is possible for a small additional cost — just ask for the exact price.

Can I customize a private tour for sunrise or sunset?

Absolutely. Sunrise at Pico do Arieiro (east) and sunset at Cabo Girão (west) are very popular options. The price structure is the same — only the schedule is adjusted. Contact us to schedule.

How do I get the 10% discount when booking both sides?
Just mention “West + East Combo” at the time of booking. The discount applies automatically to both shared and private tours.
Are the tours suitable for children and elderly?

Yes. Tours are flexible and can be adapted to your group’s pace. Minivans are more comfortable for elderly people. Jeeps are more exciting for children, but shake more. Let us know your group details when booking.
